Passion or purpose?

Passion. In my late 20’s I was in a professional play, and had become disillusioned with the industry. I spoke with one of the veteran actors about the “lack of money”, and he asked “can I tell you a true story?” I nodded, and the words changed my life...

“In Italy, a church was undergoing renovation, it was the first time scaffold had been erected to fix the top spires.
Behind one of the turrets, totally invisible to the people below, one of the contractors found a large Angel carved out of marble.
It was breathtaking. Perfect in every detail, yet not one person after the church was formed would have seen her.
It puzzled so many when the find was announced. Why would an artist create such a masterpiece for it not to be seen?”

I took a breath, I knew what was coming. “Because the artist creates for arts sake. For the love. For the passion. For the joy of creating. That is why we perform. Because it is our passion.”

I reflect on this often. Not just in art but in life. Sometimes, we get caught up in needing recognition and forget WHY we started in the first place. Passion is an inside game regardless of how many eyes are watching.

Life lesson: passion vs praise
