Use your tongue wisely
Anti bullying. It was anti bullying day yesterday and it made me reflect on times where I was bullied… and also the bully.
And what I’ve learnt about both situations is; it’s all about power. At the heart of a bully is fear. Then we rally other people around against another person to form a power pack of tongues. This may be in the form of gossip, slander, using tongue to cut another person mentally. Consuming their self esteem to elevate a sense of lack.
After my head injury (feeling the lowest I’ve ever felt), gossip felt like breathing in chemical poison. Because I had fully experienced what it feels like to have no self esteem. No power.
Yet what I’ve learnt is that real self esteem doesn’t come from what other people think of us, or say about us. It’s an inside thing. When we love ourselves, the ability for others to take our power is diminished.
The urge to take power from others wanes. Because we have an inside glow.
Our tongue may be the reason someone has a good day or a bad one. As I say to my children, “if you can’t say something kind to one another, close the mouth”. There is a clear difference between constructive feedback and being unkind.
Life lesson: the tongue is a blade, only unsheath it to knight others
