Who's the monkey?
Imagine you’re driving your car along a windy mountainous road. ⛰️ The tight turns look down on a rocky ravine, and you are laser focused on navigation. Your window is open as the crisp fresh breeze whips across your face...
Suddenly, a monkey 🐵 jumps in the window, wrestles your hands off the steering wheel, and takes CHARGE! The car swerves across the road as you fill with rage at the clawing monkey. Then you get scared because you are teetering near the edge of the precipice. Finally you pull the car to a grinding stop and freeze... as the monkey turns to you and says...
“Welcome to your brain”. 🧠 We travel through life with moments of clarity. We navigate the road, then something monkeyish happens. The protective mechanism in our brain activates the FIGHT/ FLIGHT/FREEZE mechanism, and it’s all about creating safety. Yet the monkey takes the steering wheel, as our emotions take control.
The three most powerful ways to kick the monkey from the wheel involve getting more oxygen which helps the brain to steer again:
1: Deep belly breathing
2: Exercise - move the body calm the brain
3: Meditation/prayer with the breath
Life lesson: intentional oxygen can remove the monkey from the wheel 🛞
